Robert M. Gorrell, a graduate of Cornell University, taught at Deep Springs College, California from 1939 to 1942, and at Indiana University from 1942 to 1945. He joined the English department of the University of Nevada in 1945, serving as chairman from 1947 to 1965. Gorrell also served as dean of the Graduate School, dean of General University Extension, and dean of the College of Arts and Science, remaining in that post until becoming vice president for acadmic affairs in 1976. Charlton G. Laird was a linguist and professor of English at the University of Nevada, 1945-1968. In addition to his own publications, he co-authored English text books with Robert M. Gorrell, and a language book with wife, Helen Gent Laird.
