Robert M. Gorrell, a graduate of Cornell University, taught at Deep Springs College, California from 1939 to 1942, and at Indiana University from 1942 to 1945. He joined the English department of the University of Nevada in 1945, serving as chairman from 1947 to 1965. Charlton G. Laird was a linguist and professor of English at the University of Nevada, 1945-1968. In addition to his own publications, he co-authored English text books with Robert M. Gorrell, and a language book with wife, Helen Gent Laird.
